6.4 Critical Learning Incident.
The day had started. I had noticed one of our students was at the door to enter when he ran after his mother onto the oval. As this happened, I had gone out to ensure he was ok. Prior to this the student had shown separation issues with his mother.
I had tried to use a calm demeanour to have the student come to class but I was told no.
I had returned to class to advise my mentor what has happening all while keeping my eye on the student. While I was there, another teacher had seen the incident and had advised admin to come and assist.
When my mentor went out to ensure the child came to class, I was asked to stay with the students and divert their attention. I was able to do this with a copy me game.
The student was taken to the office to calm him down . The student was returned to class. I had collected him at the door and sat with him during the first activity.
Upon conversation with the child, he was exhausted due to a situation at home and my mentor had provided him with a safe space to have a rest.
As a pre-service teacher, I felt I had made the correct decisions in dealing with this incident. As a teacher in my own classroom, admin would have been called immediately for assistance as my duty of care is also with 25 other students.
